Major Project: Coupling pilot episode research

Locations: 2 street locations on route to bar. Outside the bar. 2 x Bar locations but clearly interlinking. Toilets. Steve's living room. Office Hallway. Susan's office. 1 street location on route to restaurant. Restaurant.

Characters: 6 characters. 3 men. 3 women.
Patrick - The attractive guy who doesn't settle down
Jeff - The funny but stupid friend
Steve - the average one
Sally - the neurotic one
Susan - The pretty one
Jane - The weird one

Storylines and how they link:
  • We first meet Jeff and Steve & then Sally and Susan. They are 2 sets of friends and are walking on similar streets, each talking about meeting someone. It is assumed it will be each other and implied that Susan and Steve are dating. This instantly establishes a storyline in the 1st minute of the show.
  • Sally tell us about the fact she only smiles at single men - something she does at Patrick when he becomes single later that episode.
  • Susan books a facial with Sally which is later canceled by Sally unexpectedly. We learn she cancels to meet and probably hook up with Patrick.
  • Jeff explains the title for the episode 'Flushed' when describing how steve cant dump/get rid off his girlfriend. She's unflushable. The 2 do eventually break up therefore explaining the title 'Flushed'.
  • We begin to learn the characters names between 3-4 minutes.
  • We learn that Susan is infact meeting Patrick, a seemingly new character, and not Steve. Steve meets his girlfriend Jane at the same moment. In the same bar.
  • It is mentioned by Steve a recurring argument about 'crippin' that him and Jane have. Susan later mentions overhearing one of these arguments on first meeting Steve at a work event.
  • 10 mins into the show and it is introduced that Jeff knows Susan from work. Linking the storylines.
  • Sally tells Jeff that Susan has just dumped Patrick. Jeff again reiterates the link of the shows title calling Patrick and 'unflushable'.
  • Susan leaves for the toilet. Steve and Jane are in a cubicle, about to have sex. Steve is seemingly hurried out of the toilet to buy protection as he falls to the floor and drops loose change. He sees Susan and tries to cover his tracks, seemingly he does not know her. But she remembers him from an office party jeff brought him and steves then girlfriend to.
  • Susan tells Steve at that office party she tried to chat him up and asks if he is still with that girl. He asks her out.
  • Steve tries to stop Susan from using the toilet as Jane is still in there.
  • Susan asks Jeff about Steve who explains he is having trouble with an 'Unflushable'. Susan thinks he means toilet problems.
  • Jeff explains to Steve that him and Susan once dated but it didn't work out as he made her nervous. This turns out to be the other way round and Jeff had a panic attack on their date.
  • Steve tries to break up one more time with jane over the phone but instead is cut off midway by a full answering machine and therefore leaving a really nice message for her by mistake. Jane later refers to herself as feeling 'flushed' at hearing the message. A different meaning than the intended title but again use of it.
  • Jeff does not want Susan to tell Steve about the nervous problem and therefore panics and tries to stop the truth coming out and what he has told Steve being told to Susan. He therefore tries to tag along with Steve on the date.
  • Jane turns up on the date and Susan turns up earlier than expected. The 2 meet and Jane tells Susan she is Steve's Girlfriend. Steve explains he has a girlfriend at the moment as Susan is early. Jane breaks up with Steve at the news he had planned a date with Susan.
  • The show ends with all 6 having dinner together on Steve and Susan's First date after binding over Susan flashing.
Here is a online video of the first episode:

Overall i have found this research a really helpful task as i will now use it to compare with the other pilot episodes on my list and also see how the characters develop through the series from this first episode.

Stay safe,

Helen
