Locations: Kate/lee's Flat, pub, Flat gorundfloor, apartment block hallway,
Storylines:
- Kate is trying to help lee find another job, he is not happy but agrees. Lee is trying to fix the blocked sink. Kate is also annoyed that lee has had tim over. Kate says she annoyed that tim think she still needs him.
- Lee tells tim that he had a job interview. Tim tries to help with his interview technique but then lee reveals they offered him the job but it would involve moving out of the flat. Tim realises that because lee isn't thrilled this means that he doesn't want to move out.
- Kate is pleased lee got a job especially as it is in property and therefore a proper job. However she is sad that lee will be moving out. However when she walks him downstairs he walks into the ground floor flat revealing he is the new maintenance man and will be living in the same building as her.
- kate is moping round the flat when tim shows up. Tim has come round to tell her she should get a new roommate and it should be a girl - so lee can't move back in, and so she doesn't live with another man.
- Tim tells lee to stick at the job even though he hates it. Tim tries to get lee to stay so lee can impress kate.
- Lee runs into kate in the hallway and they reveal they miss each other. But she tells him she is interviewing a new flatmate later which upsets tim.
- Tim and lee meet rates potential flatmate and it is a man. They decide to get lee to quit the job and move back in because tim knows nothing has happened between kate and lee and is worried that the new flatmate is too good-looking.
- Lee tries to put the man off by telling him kate does something disgusting. He quickly leaves and leaves lee to tell kate. Lee tells kate that he wants to move back in but he doesn't want to quit his job. So kate throws an item he has to look after out of the window causing him to be sacked. Lee then moves back in with kate.
This is the final episode of the series. I feel that the storyline with kate and lee didn't develop enough to keep my interest throughout the series and would have liked there to be some sort of cliffhanger or reveal to kate because it just leaves the whole series as a very slow build up to nothing. I can learn from watching this show and feel watching the first series of friends will contrast dramatically and show how a slow relationship bond is developed correctly - ross and rachel.

Major Project: Not Going Out Epsiode 5 research

- Kate informs lee that a teenage boy is coming to stay. She says nicky, will bring his dog until lee says he is allergic. The teenager, Nicky, is annoyed that this means that the dog can't stay. Nicky is also a goth.
- As lee tries to bond with nicky it is clear nicky isn't interested and enjoys winding up lee. However at the pub nicky enjoys tims bad jokes and bonds with tim over their mutual love of metal music.
- kate tries to get nickys dog to become a vegetarian but he is sick when she feeds him a meat free treat. Tim gives her advice about training him.
- tim takes nicky back to the flat and kate is annoyed lee has left nicky with him. She is surprised that they have bonded. When lee returns kate is furious with him. kate asks him to remember what he was like as a child.
- at the pub tim tells lee to be more understanding of nicky and listen to him and try harder to connect. Lee wonders if he can get hold of a copy of a rare album to give nicky as a gift as he had earlier mentioned how much he wanted it. He finds it and impresses nicky and kate.
- Lee takes nicky down the pub and lets him have a shandy, as long as he doesn't tell kate. Lee tells nicky its ok that they don't have anything in common because they are different ages but that doesn't mean they can't get along. - At the flat, nicky tries hard to get kate and tim back together. Kate tries to tell nicky she isn't interested and then nicky tries to tell kate lee likes her but the doorbell goes and nicky's dog is on the doorstep with a sign around its neck reading surprise. she closes the door and when lee opens the door after it is now tim behind the door wearing the sign. Tim reveals it was lee's idea for the dog to stay with them.
- Kate and lee play fifa while the dog sleeps on their laps. Lee's allergies are quite bad. Kate says a joke that lee told nicky earlier. She tells it wrong as she didn't understand it.
i feel this episode didn't really add to the story arch of the series as nothing developed really. At a push lee did make some nice gestures but they were for the child and not directly for kate although she was impressed.

Major Project: Not Going Out Epsiode 4 Research
Locations: Lee's Car, Kate/Lee's Flat, Pub, acupuncture office,
Storylines:
- Lee is teaching Kate to drive. She is struggling and when reverse parking crashes the car into a parked car.
- Lee is still angry and kate tells him he needs to be more calm as he is very stressed. It is also revealed that kate hit a guide dog. Kate suggests yoga to help lee relax or acupuncture.
- At the pub lee finds an article in nuts that tries to help relieve stress. Tim ask a series of questions from the article to determine if Lee is stressed.
- There are more jokes about tim's younger ex girlfriend.
- At the flat kate does yoga with lee. He takes a few short cuts. When meditating he gets a little anxious when kate tells him to imagine a candle as he thinks about wax dropping onto the floor. he goes on a rant kate books him and acupuncture appointment.
- Kate learns to drive with tim, he think he can use it to win her back. she reverses the car into a wall as tim continues to bring up the relationship.
- lee is adamant that acupuncture is a sham and argues with the therapist.
- Tim encourages kate to park the car in a small space, the opposite of what lee did earlier in the episode. She is pleased with his encouragement and parks perfectly.
- at the pub, tim says he is pleased with how kate's lessons with him are going. Tim asks why lee is bothered that he is getting on so well with kate but lee says it is more that everyone keeps calling him stressed. Lee tells tim that his doctors has given him tranquillisers but tim tells them they are dangerous. When tim asks if he has tried everything lee mentions kate said she could try massage on him, tim encourages him to take the drugs after all. Lee does but with a small about of beer.
- at the flat, lee is very spaced out and kate is very concerned. Lee asks kate to go to tai chi with him on friday, she agrees and he says its a date. But then he takes it back awkwardly.
- Lee and tim both take kate on a driving lesson. Tim tells her to watch her speed but lee says she is doing fine - he is still a little spaced out from the drugs. She says she isn't going that fast because the dial is nowhere near the f - tim says this is the petrol. Tim also asks if they should put on the central locking after lee has a lie down. tim tries to ask kate out for friday but she has already made plans with lee. Tim rants and says that she will be end up sleeping with lee but lee mishears this as tim will sleep with lee. Kate discovers lee took tablets to be relaxed as she thought he was relaxed from yoga. This stresses her out and causing her to drive faster. Tim again rants about kate blames him to everything and the two argue. Lee tries to get kate to slow down. They crash.
- Lee has a neck brace on. Kate reveals she passed her test.
This episode again seems to repeat the same stories so if I'm honest is a little boring. The joke are good but as there is no new characters to mix up the dynamic it seems a little stale and it is only 4 episodes in. I think this is a good lesson because as much as the audience will want lee and kate to get together and for it to be organic the build up can be a little dull if each of the development episodes are the same. There needs to be obstacles to their relationship and so far the only one is tim and it is just a constant cycle.

Major Project: Not going out Epsiode 3 Research
Locations: Kate/ lee's Flat, Pub, shopping centre, Kates Bedroom, Cafe,
Storylines:
- Lee has a new job handing out leaflets dressed as a parrot down the shopping centre. Kate is pleased he has a job and says she is proud. She is being so nice to him that lee knows she wants a favour. Kate says a friend of hers is coming to stay and lee says thats fine and she can stay as long as she wants however as it is kate's apartment this wasn't the favour. Kate says her friend has always been more successful than her - better job, bigger house etc. The only thing kate had that her friend didn't is a boyfriend but now she isn't with tim. She says her friend hasn't actually met tim and that she has exaggerated things and said how well things are still going for them so asks lee to pretend to be tim. He initially refuses but agrees with little persuasion She says he will sleep on the floor in her room.
- Lee tells tim about the favour. Tim believes this to mean kate still has feelings for him. She also says kate would never go out with a guy like lee. Tim tries to pretend to be lee but lee laughs at him.
- There are more recurring jokes about tim and his young ex girlfriend.
- kate gets lee up early to go with her to the airport to pick her friend up. She also says it is not weird that she could actually end up with someone like lee. The plan to fool rates friend goes well initially and lee is vague about what he does. She asks about rates old flatmate lee and they say he moved out which the friend is sad about as she wishes she could have gone on a date with a british man while she was here.
- at the shopping centre lee is dressed as a gorilla handing out leaflets. A kid kicks him.
- Tim asks lee if he has kissed kate while they have been pretending and lee says no. He also worries about the fact lee has to share a room with kate.
- Lee makes kate worried that her friend might walk in when he is sleeping on the floor so she tells him to sleep in her bed. It is awkward. Her friend walks in and gives them both presents. Lee's is massage oil to use for the couples anniversary. She tells lee to show kate how happy he is that they are still together so he tries to shake her hand. Kate is cross when the friend leaves the room and asks him to be more romantic. They fight and lee sleeps on the floor.
- at a cafe kates friend says she envy kate which makes her happy. Then the waitress recognises kate and asks her how she is doing since her split with tim after he cheated on her. She says that she has forgiven tim and they have moved on from it. While she is talking about how well tim is doing, lee walks past dressed as a rabbit and is kicked again by the child. noone notices.
- at the flat the friend give lee the cold shoulder, which confuses lee until kate tells him the updated situation. her friend says she can tell that the two are in love and she is sad she hasn't met anyone. Tim suddenly walks into the flat pretending to be lee. The friend likes him and he stays for dinner, Tim comes across very camp when he is pretending to be lee. The friend says the first time she saw lee and kate together they made a lovely couple with annoys tim but because of her emails she thought kate fancied lee because she always talks about him. This further annoys tim causing him to reveal everything. The friend is cross kate has lied.
- The next day kates friend has calmed down and leaves. lee reveals he has been sacked after he threw a kid into the canal. Kate asks lee if they made a nice couple. he gives a quiet yeah and she says sarcastically that she is sad it is over and will miss the romantic chats. Lee asks kate whats she thought of being his girlfriend and she says it was alright with a smile.
So far still only the 3 main characters and now focussing on the relationship between kate and lee or the potential for one. This episode again had an a storyline - kates friend and the lie, and the b storyline - lee's new job and again they link together when lee walks past the cafe, in costume, while kate is talking to her friend. I am finding it useful to see how they slowly develop this relationship so that it feels more natural than forced and rushed.

Major project: Not Going Out Episode 2 Research
Locations: Lee/ Kate's Flat, pub, Therapists office, Park, church, Funeral wake in a posh room,
Storyline:
- Kate leaves Lee a note asking him to get a few bits and bobs for her while she is at work and also that she has made him some vegan muffins - this is a recurring joke from episode one about her making unusual vegan food that everyone hates.
- Tim pops round to see kate but she is out and speaks to lee instead. He tells him his nan has died. Lee offers him a drink of whisky but all he has is a fruity girly cocktail which tim actually likes.
- Kate comes home later and lee tells her about tim's nan. She says she should visit but lee tries to put her off by saying tim is fine. Kate says that is because lee doesn't express emotions so neither will tim around him. She suggests lee see a therapist he laughs it off until she tells him tim did. He wants to impress her so he agrees.
- Kate meets with tim at the pub and she apologises about his nan. Tim drinks the same cocktail at the bar that tim gave him. The two discuss their history involving time nan.
- Lee is at the therapists, She asks him if he tells a lot of jokes when he is around women as he has already told her some. She continues asking him questions about women trying to get him to open up. She asks him about kate and he says they get along and don't really argue. The therapist then asks lee about his mum which again laughs off and says is typical of a therapist.
- Tim and kate are walking in the park, He says he will be eating alone tonight so she invites him for dinner with her and lee. Tim is slightly annoyed by her referring to her and lee as an us.
- Kate, lee and tim are cooking together. Lee is the least helpful and mainly makes jokes and drinks. Tim reads his eulogy. Lee tries to show he is sensitive and says he wrote a poem for his nan but kate knows he is lying. Tim says he is going to the funeral alone so kate offers to go - he says he is ok but gives her the details and says he will pick her up.
- Lee is worried that kate and tim will get back together at the funeral and tells kate this.
- Tim says he is going to ask kate about the song for the funeral. He asks lee if it bothers him that kate and tim are getting on well again and lee says no he's just sad he wasn't invited to the funeral. When he is asked he turns it down. Again tim is drinking the cocktail at the pub.
- Lee's therapist asks him if he is in love with someone. Lee says no but the therapist asks him further about kate. He insists kate likes him but only as a friend. The therapist insists he has a proper chat with kate and discuss his feelings, she says it will go well along as he picks a good moment.
- At the funeral, a phone goes off playing celebration. it is revealed to be lee sitting at the back of the church.
- Kate asks lee why he came as it is obvious a late decision - he isn't wearing black or a suit. He goes to tell kate his feelings and she looks hopeful but tim approaches drink another cocktail. He asks lee to get him a drink leaving kate and tim alone. He tries to get back with kate by asking her going back to his. She refuses.
- Lee comes back and kate leaves. Tim tells lee that kate turned him down and lee is worried. Tim asks him to check if kate is ok. Tim gives a drunken speech to lee about how he is a great friend. Lee decides not to go and check on kate but instead to stay with tim and take care of him.
- At the flat, lee imitates the therapist sessions with a toy monkey as the client. Kate walks in, She asks if he got tim home ok. She asks what lee was going to say at the funeral and he says it can wait. He says he has quit therapy but is going to be more open.
This episode doesn't introduce any more characters into the series but continues the main storyline of the love triangle of tim/kate/lee. It adds a bit more light and shade into the series by having a funeral which is usually not something jokes can be made off but there are still laughs and more heartfelt moments between the characters. That is something i like about this show as it makes you become more attached to the characters.

Major Project: Not Going Out Episode 1 Research
Locations: Lee/ Kate's Flat, Pub, Clown workshop, Restaurant, art gallery,
Characters:
Lee - a juvenile and lazy slacker, who goes from one job to another, living off the good graces of his Californian landlady Kate, with whom he shares a flat in London. It is not long before they find that their friendship is changing into something more.
Tim - Lee's best friend, an accountant from Henley, and Kate's ex-boyfriend (they broke up when he cheated on her with 23-year-old Emma) and he wants to repair their relationship.
Kate - Lee's American Landlady/housemate and the Ex girlfriend of Tim.
Storylines:
- Lee is lazy and doesn't really do anything. He currently has got himself a job making christmas crackers from home but kate is trying to get him to do something more. Kate is asked to arrange a date for a client at work and she suggests Lee he initially refuses until he is told it will all be paid for.
- Kate has some leaflets for Lee about work including one about becoming a clown. Lee doesn't think he is suited and neither is kate but she decides to go on it to prove she is fun - something Tim left her for not being.
- There is a lot of romantic tension between kate and lee but is put to one side.
- We discover that lee and tim are best friends. Tim asks about kate at the pub and it is clear he wants her back. Lee wants to stay out of it as he is friends with both of them. Tim wants to apologise for cheating on kate and decides to do it this week.
- Kate goes to the clown workshop in full attire, something that the others at the workshop are not. When she is home she tells lee that when she is wearing her clown nose he should call her by her clown name - foo foo.
- On the date, Lee's date goes badly as the woman reveals all the details from her past which she wrote about in her autobiography. He is awkward but tries to make the best of it although he is very bored.
- While lee is on his date, tim visits kate at home. She is taking her clown make up off. Tim stays for dinner and tries to apologise but it goes badly when she sticks up for lee.
- Lee arrives home and complains to kate about the terrible date. When kate says its because he couldnt handle a serious relationship lee says he is going to ask her out again which seems to upset kate.
- Lee takes his date to a war gallery where she is as serious and depressing as ever. Lee lies and tells the woman he was adopted which seems to help her bond with him.
- At the pub lee discusses his dates with tim. Tim also subtly warns lee off kate. Lee says he isn't comfortable with sharing private information with his date but tim says they should go on another date and invite tim and kate along - a double date. He agrees but isn't happy. kate isn't happy about the double date but eventually caves and says she will be there after clown club.
- Kate throws a bucket of water over her instructor rather than a bucket of confetti because 'her clown is a maverick'. It doesn't go down well.
- Lee branches out in his cracker making and begins writing his own jokes for events including funerals, birthdays etc
- At the pub tim worries kate hates him. She buys them all chris and calls him a bastard which sort of confirms this but she has turned up on the date. Lee tries to help them become friends by using words his date used to describe his behaviour. It works and tim apologises to kate but they argue again about Tim's young fling. Kate is cross that lee is trying to get them back together but he insists he isn't which pleases kate but annoys tim causing lee to have an outburst and end up insulting his date.
- Kate is kicked out of clown club for throwing a pie at her instructor. It is revealed lee's date thought lee was too serious and is glad they aren't dating anymore. Lee is sacked from his cracker making job when one of his funeral jokes is found in a christmas cracker.
The reason i felt i should watch this show is because it is currently airing and is very popular in the UK. The other sitcoms i am watching are no longer on the air but this is so gives me a good idea of the kind of things that are successful currently. Also this show was cancelled but due to success of dvd sales and a petitions was brought back and has since had 4 more series made. I also find the relationship between the character of lee and kate is very interesting and wanted to look at how that progressed throughout the first season.
The interesting thing about this pilot is that it doesn't have a lot of the characters in it that will be in the series. Similarly due to casting changes and actor availability the main cast changes each season yet is still successful so i think the writing is key here and therefore a good reason to look at how they write the series.
So far the differences between this and the other shows are that this is very pun heavy and uses jokes that require the audience to have a certain understanding of pop culture. It also has a good heart to it with the relationship of the characters but i think there were a lot more joke elements in this pilot which seems to be a recurrent theme. I think they cant put to much heart into he opening episode as it takes time for people to invest in characters. So far Lee has plenty of unlikable traits - he is lazy and doesn't have a job but he is funny and aloof and his clear feelings for kate intrigue the audience just enough for them to want to come back. Similarly it is interesting to see how it could work if he gets together with her when she is tim ex. maybe tim will win her back... plenty of possibilities from a opening episode.
The one thing i did notice from this is that there is are 2 stories. the a plot - Lee's date and a b plot - lucy becoming a clown. Lee is able to link into lucy's plot and also bring her into his date plot through the double date which also brings in tim. This is something that was done cleverly in coupling but not something the imbetweeners did.

She tells jay she used to dj in ibiza and that she think he is good and she could probably get him a slot out there - seemingly she is also an exaggerator like jay. He tries to play it sensitive and talk about how much he likes the music but she unintentionally quotes him asking if he is bent. He is shocked but pleased and invites her to join him at the decks. The nerdy boy comes back with 2 drinks, one for him and one for jay but jay takes both and gives one to the girl.

- will and simon discuss the dance in the school gym. They celebrate that will did a good job and didnt get beaten up and simon said he had a good time even though he didnt say what he wanted to to carli he wasnt bothered about it. Neil comes in and is embarrassed about trying to kiss the teacher. It is also revealed that mr gilbert is dating miss timms.
- Jay enters and says he got a blowjob behind the decks but the boys dont believe him he then reveals it to be a hand job and they laugh and tell him he is lying and he then tells the truth saying it was over his trousers. The boys mess about on the trampoline as the credits begin.
Overall the series has been slightly different to coupling. There is one main story throughout each episode in this series while coupling interlinks a few. They tell a lot more recurring jokes about bothlink back to things that happened in the original episode which i think is a nice touch and a good way of rounding it all off. This series however felt like a nice ending. I usually expect a cliff hanger but the series was fairly well concluded but also leaves a lot for their to be done in the future series as we wonder if any of the boys will have a successful relationship and see how they will grow. I think i prefer the writing style of coupling as i think it is a lot more clever but i think a mix of this sort of humour would suit well with a football show as it is similar to the banter that is often found in the changing room / locker room of a sports team. I have found researching this series very useful as i think it has helped me to think about my male characters more and give them clear identities like this show has. I think the boys in inbetweeners are fairly one dimensional to begin with but as the series progresses, especially with the character of jay, we start to see other sides of them which make them more real rather than caricatures. I also dont want them t be stereotypical characters, i think having a clear identity but also making them realistic is key and perhaps modelling the characters from traits of different people might be a good way to begin the character process.

They kiss in the corner of the dancefloor and then she tries to take him outside to sleep with him. Will also gets his shoes stolen by children.
- Jay walks into the toilets to see his dad who mentions he saw jay chatting to a fat girl and when jay tells him he was just keeping her busy so simon can talk to her friend his dad tells him not to be embarrassed as jay isn't good with girls and should take what he can get. She is shocked and furious and reveals that she isnt going to have sex with him and doesnt understand why he would think this. They renter the disco and a furious simon yells at jay for lying about saying she is an easy lay and that he had slept with her. The boys leave quickly before they are yelled at.

He also reveals the girl to be the emo girl.
This episode feels like a slow conclusion to the series. one of the boys finally got lucky with a girl and they exposed some of jays lies even though he tries to continue them on. I think its important that the characters start to complete some of their goals in the series as again if they always fail it isnt worth watching. You want them to have a few wins so its unpredictable.

Major Project: Pitch research
I found a good article about pitching guidelines for an original tv series.
Here are the points from the article:
Here is the link:
http://masteringfilm.com/pitching-guidelines-for-original-tv-series/
I have found this useful and will refer back to this when i am creating the book etc for hand in for the pre production unit.
stay safe,
Helen
Here are the points from the article:
1. Your pitch presentation should have the same tone as the genre of the series.
This is something that i have found very useful as it discusses the tone of the pitch. This is something i will be helping to convey through written pieces about characters and plot an obvious at the show is a sitcom it needs to be funny to show the show is funny.
2. Set the stage for the pitch before delving into the basic story points (“beats”) in the pilot episode.
This is where i will discuss the length of the show, the time period it is set etc.
3. Make eye contact with everyone.
4. Once the stage is set, start with a killer teaser to pique their interest.
This is something i have thought about. How to get people interested. I think i would like to talk about the show, tell a story from the view of one of characters maybe leading to a joke that shows again the tone of the show.
5. Once you’ve effectively grabbed their attention with the teaser, pitch out the basic A and B stories of the pilot episode.
Here the article suggests using sketches to show the characters but we are going to hire our actors and use picture of them and to discuss important and interesting facts about them rather than to bombard them with lots of information that is mostly irrelevant. I know what my main story of the pilot is already but need to work on strengthening my b plot.
6. Present the basic structure of the pilot episode.
Simon has told me that our pilot needs to have some form of conclusion but is open ended enough that it feels like part of series. I have a good idea of the pilots conclusion and they discuss how important this is in the article in this section.
7. End your pitch of the pilot episode on a high note that portends future conflicts versus too much resolution and harmony.
As i am writing the whole series for this show i have already envisioned most on what will happen during the series. I have a clear arc for most of the characters now and will soon begin on writing down their journeys so that we know what will happen throughout the series to each character. Therefore i know that the pilot has an ending that will show of future conflicts and people wanting more.
8. Make them care.
Emotional investment is key!
9. Clarify the week-to-week of your series.
by having episode synopsis's it will be clear what is happening in each episode.
10. Show them your series is set on fertile ground.
similar point to the last. episode loglines to show that the episodes are on the same track.
11. What is your intention for your series?
12. Briefly and succinctly pitch out the basic mythology of the series.
make the 'network' want to ask questions about your characters.
13. Let them know if it’s a “premise” pilot or a “non-premise” pilot
My pilot is a non premise pilot. We are dropped right into the action from the very start of the show. It is just a day for the characters, but it is the first time we see this world.
14. Think about casting—networks are all about getting the widest audience possible for their brand, so it’s always a good idea to have diversity in your cast.
Having diversity among the cast means the characters will reflect the world more realistically. this means making is multiracial and multigenrational. I have already considered this and having played on a football team i know that most non league teams are made up of a wide age group and diverse people many players are a lot older ad some as young as 16. this is something i have taken into account when creating the characters.
15. If you have a huge canvas of characters for an ensemble series, it can be helpful to prepare a visual aid—such as a chart—to refer to each character.
16. A short (three minutes or less) “sizzle reel” can be effective if it’s really provocative and well executed.
This is something i would have to discuss with chris and danny as this would be their job but i think it sounds interesting and potentially we could do something rather than to do with the episodes more of a extra you might get on a shows website. for example greys anatomy introduced new interns in one of its seasons and had an online mini series of about 5 minutes each episode which featured the interns as central focus. This could be an option but again it is something to think about but for the boys to decide.
17. Props can be a useful selling tool, but don’t use them as a crutch.
This is something we have talked about and i think needs to be looked at further as we need to consider what it will bring to the pitch.
18. Finish the pitch, and don’t buy it back.
19. Hollywood is built on relationships.
20. Be a professional.
21. Don’t discuss finances or price quotes in the pitch meeting.
22. I generally recommend that you have three pitches prepared when you’re meeting with a producer. Only ever pitch one idea. Be confident in your idea and show that you are passionate in getting this idea on the air.

I have found this useful and will refer back to this when i am creating the book etc for hand in for the pre production unit.

Major Project: Pitch research - Friends
I have been doing some research into the kind of pitch the team should put together for our show. I am focusing my research on similar genre shows and looking in particular at the areas i will be working on - the writing aspects. This is something we spoke to simon about and he made it clear we needed to make sure there were no overlap of jobs - Chris is Editor and DOP so he needs to focus on this, Danny is director so he needs to look at the directing in football films and sitcoms, Aimee is producer so she needs to looks at the organisational side, budget, planning, risk assessments, casting and promotion etc. Then if there are still jobs or areas we have left to fill Aimee must decide who should do these jobs and whether it would be better to bring in someone from the outside to fill these roles or if one of us is capable of doing it. I think this is a good idea as i know from a personal point of view although i am keen to be involved in as much as possible it is not always helpful for me to be involved in certain things. Working on the Studio production i found myself over stretched at times when i tried to take on too much and as much as we all are going to be involved and equal in decisions we have to allow our teammates their own creative control in their area of expertise. We can make suggestions but we have to respect whoever is in charge of that area.
When i began looking into the pitching aspect for the show i came across a website called good in a room. Which has lots of pilot scripts and pitching advice for screenwriters. A page i found particularly helpful was:
http://goodinaroom.com/blog/original-pitch-tv-show-friends/
This looked at the original pitch for the TV show Friends. This is a show i am going to look at in detail over the summer to help research the sitcom genre.
They use an 80 word synopsis to tell people what the show is about and in those 80 words we are able to establish:

They use an 80 word synopsis to tell people what the show is about and in those 80 words we are able to establish:
- Heroes (six people in their 20’s, young, single)
- Setting (city, coffee house)
- Themes (sex, love, relationship, careers)
- Tone (an optimistic tone that isn’t sappy)
- The Big Idea (your friends are your family)
i also read an interview with the writer for the show who discussed the changes that came from pitching the shoe to networks. In my case teacher helen and simon are the 'network' and as always will offer advice not our work but i doubt they will be making huge demands and changes like a usual network.
here is a link to the interview:
The writers found they had to to tests with audiences to see if the characters were liked as the network was worried that some characters wouldn't be likeable. The show also went through various name changes before deciding on a final name. And characters changed when actors put their own spin on a character for example matt le blanc played joey as dim and they liked it and he became a massive source for comedy in the show. They also originally has plans for monica and joey to be together and for them to be the big couple but after writing the scripts they realised ross and rachel would work.
this goes to show how things can change and how you need to be flexible when pitching ideas. You need a clear idea of what your show is to be but things like characters can be developed as you write about them and learn from how an actor portrays them.

Jay says he thinks its donavan but neil says no but he can't remember who it is. Simon asks him to think because if it is donavan they should warn will. Charlotte and will kiss upstairs. After much deliberating Neil says it is infact donavan and simon panics as donavan walks in. He approaches charlottes friends then walks over to the gang. Donavan walks in on charlotte and will kissing and demands will leaves, as he goes to leave charlotte makes him stay and she tells donavan they are over.

- charlotte says hello to the gang at school, will decides to follow and chat to her on the way into school and she reveals some intimate details about her weekend but will ignores and asks her about other things. Charlotte thinks this is because will is awkward about sex and asks him if he is a virgin. He lies badly about who he's slept with and charlotte offers him to come round her house to make her his number 6. They kiss and will is excited.
- The boys find neil reading in the library as he wants to appear clever for his blind date event at school. He wants to appear clever as girls like clever boys but he is struggling with the books.
- Charlotte texts will even tho they are in the same room, jay says she won't come over because she is so embarrassed of will but will reveals that they are going to have sex on friday so she can't be that ashamed of him. He also shares with the boys that he told her he wasn't a virgin, jay offers his advice which everyone is sure is a lie. Simon says he thinks everybody can see charlotte is just using will to make donavan jealous, will is upset because they don't know charlotte and they think he isn't her type. The boys and will fall out and simon says they aren't friends.
- wills mum tells him he shouldn't go for the pretty girls as everyone is after them and he would have more of a chance with the plainer girls, will is again hurt by this.
- Jay's football friend drives up and he goes to say hello, the boys whisper friend jokes and so he has an awkward conversation with him and palms off the offer to drive the car later.
- will is in bed with charlotte, he asks her if she is going to hurt him, she ignores the question. they try to have sex but it becomes obvious that will doesn't know what he's doing. Charlotte tries to help him but gives up and asks him to leave and not tell anyone what happened and not to count it as loosing his virginity.
- The boys are still winding jay up about his football friend and they spot his car. Jay gets so annoyed he jumps onto the bonnet and starts jumping around and shouting.
- At the school blind date event, neil picks the girl who was also new at the same time as will and is clearly very clever. Neil is gutted when he sees the other contestants. The boys see will and approach him asking where his girlfriend is, will lies and says she is meeting him here. Will speaks to another of the fellow new kids he met on the first day who asks him about his girlfriend. will reveals her name and that he loves her. As the next blind date develops it is revealed that charlotte is taking part, upsetting will as she reveals herself to be single and that she has been messing around with boys but is looking for a man. The boys and everyone laugh.
- will is upset at home with his mum, He is sad that he dumped his friends for a girl and that she humiliated him. His mums suggests he moves schools incase he is bullied again but will insists he stays and that he has never been bullied. the doorbell goes and it is the boys, they want to ask him to come and witness neil's date as the girl is very young and infant taking her a levels early. Her mum has had to go on the date with them which the boys think is hilarious. will agrees to go as it amuses him also. Will asks how jays football friend is, to which jay explains they aren't friends anymore and he had to borrow £300 pound to fix the car after he damaged it.
- Will explains through voiceover what he learnt during the episode.
The cast is starting to expand slightly and also increase the tension between donavan and will. Potentially leading to a future large confrontation. the hapless boys also seem to have no luck with women and even tho it has gone slightly better for will than simon it still ends in failure. This is something that i think is important for the first series as the audience will want them to succeed more and care more about the characters rather than if they were the ones who always got the girl. People can relate more to them if they are a bit of an average joe or underdog. This is something to think about with my characters because i don't want them all to be average joes and not good with girls, i think its unrealistic for one group of friends to be all unsuccessful and rather it would be 1 or 2 out of a friendship that struggle.

Major project: Inbetweeners episode 3 research
Locations: inside learner car, 6th form centre, test centre, outside Simons house, Simons car, outside wills house, outside jays house, Thorpe park car park, Thorpe park, changing room, nemesis ride
Storylines:
- Simon is learning to drive, on his lessons he bumps into a car. He has his test coming up and they try and arrange a trip to Thorpe park is he passes.
- Neil announces he can get them free tickets as he works at Thorpe park and the boys make jokes about his dad needing the money to pay for rent boys.
- Simon has a female driving test examiner who is overly flirty with him. She gropes his leg and makes advances toward him in return for him passing his test. He doesn't share the details of this with the boys but passes.
- Simons dad has bought him a car but it is bright yellow. He is humiliated as are his friends but they are happy he parked his car.
- Simon and Will are met by Donovan who is rude to will and spits on the car.
- the boys argue about shotgun as will doesn't know what it means.
- simon, nervous about driving, is encouraged to follow a car of girls, he however pulls out in a funeral procession and looses them also leading them to arrive at Thorpe park with only two hours left. It is also revealed the girls they followed earlier are also at the theme park.
- jay opens the car door early when parking and the door comes off. Leading them to have to car the door around the theme park. Jay mentions that Neil's sisters boyfriend is a mechanic and will fix the door.
- they look for Neil and discover him dressed as a monkey. Neil is stung by wasps in his costume and it is revealed that he is naked underneath.
- the boys argue over going on the rides or looking for the girls. Jay leaves to find the girls while the boys stay with Neil, who deals with his wasp stings and discovers his clothes have been stolen - something he says happens all the time, he laughs.
- all the boys agree to go on nemesis - a ride will has been talking about all day, jay says he saw the girls head for the ride. After queuing an extra half an hour for the front 4 seats, will kicks off when there is only one space left only to discover the people in the other 3 seats are disabled. He is humiliated.
- Neil reveals that his sisters boyfriend actually works in BP garage and so Simons car can't be fixed by him. Simon is furious and jay makes more lies about having a friend in F1 who owes him a favour and can fix the car. Simon says the make beleieve friend won't help them.
- they get back to the car to discover it has been trashed. As they wonder who by, a bus with the disabled people will insulted drives past and they smile and swear at the boys. Jay is furious and wants to chase after them but is stopped by the others.
- will reveals the lessons the boys learn during he episode including that no car will ever make them look cool - linking in to the title of the show - Inbetweeners.
- finally simon rings his dad to tell him about the car starting with "it wasn't my fault" his dad his clearly furious by Simons reaction.
This episode works well as a mid series episode as it continues to introduce the characters. In comparison to coupling this show doesn't have much of an over arching storyline. Each episode is self contAined and more or less just touches on aspects or jokes from the past such as Neil's dad, jays lies or Simons crush on carli. I think I personally prefer the storytelling style of coupling as it feels more like a real life story rather than just jokes. As much as the Inbetweeners is funny it doesn't have much heart to it and that's what I'd like to bring to my show.

Major Project: Inbetweeners Epsiode 2 Research
Locations: Park, Residential Street, Simons House, Outside the off licence, off licence, Neil's House, Carli's House, Wills house, 6th form centre. Outside the headmasters office.
Storylines: Episode 2 - Bunk off
- At the park, Will hits a disabled girl, accidentally, with his frisbee. When he tries to retrieve it, it appears to Donovan that he is stealing it from her and is chased by Donavan and friends. Reiterating the ongoing issues with Donovan and Will.
- The boys agree to bunk off school the next day, Neil is unwilling as he thinks it will give them bad karma for hitting the disabled girl with the frisbee but ultimately agrees anyway.
- Will and Simon lie to Simons mum about bunking off and tell her its a non uniform day. She tells them she won't be annoyed but disappointed if they are lying. Simon proceeds to phone the school pretending to be his mother and tell them both Will and himself have food poisoning and won't be in, however he is put through to mr gilbert who knows it is simon and is furious.
- Will, dressed in simons dads suit, goes to the off licence to get served. He buys crisps, mints and some gin and liquor. The boys are unimpressed that he didn't buy beer and spent all their money of posh crisps.
- The boys head back to Neil's house and also discuss how they believe his dad to be gay, much to Neil's annoyance.
- Mr gilbert phones round the boys parents to check the boys are ill
- Jay mentions how he lost his virginity at the 'Caravan club' he holidays at - again a lie. Will says this is obviously a lie which agrivates jay causing him to tell will how he's sick of his brown nosing the teachers and parents. Suddenly Neil's Dad comes home and shouts at the boys, Will, slightly tipsy, shouts at neil's father to show he isn't a brown noser. The boys are kicked out.
- A drunken Simon realises he is in love with carli and the boys encourage him to tell her. He decides to write a love message on her driveway in spray paint. The boys are sniggering at Simon as carli and her friends show up. Initially carli is annoyed but when she sees his friends and her friends laughing she decides to invite him round her house later.
- Will offers to look after carli's brother while simon and her chat. Simon agrees. The boys decide to trade Simon's dad's drinks cupboard and replace it with various similar coloured liquid. Simon ends up incredibly drunk and him and will head to carli's.
- Will discusses a War tv show with carli's younger brother. He tells him about bombs hitting london causing the brother to become very upset and worried about his parents as they are in london.
- Simon drunkenly makes a pass at carli, who tells him she has a boyfriend. He ends up being sick everywhere.
- Will cleans up the mess and apologises to carli while simon continues to throw up on cali's brother.
- The boys walk to will's house to get cleaned up but find, neil's dad and Simons parents at the house with will's mum.
- The parents all acknowledge neil's dad as a gay man, much to his denial.
- At school the next day, will and simon are taken to the headmaster by mr gilbert for pretending to be their parents on the phone.
I think one of the reasons inbetweeners is successful is because it uses situations that its target audience experience but on a heightened level. For example in this episode the boys try and get alcohol at an off licence and will's voiceover talks about his method for getting served.
So far i have noticed the episodes only follow one main storyline and interweave it with recurring themes such as jay's lies.

He gets a boner when she smells his aftershave and jay ponts this out to the entire 6th form centre leading Simon to get the nickname of boner.
- Will is introduced to Neil and Jay by Simon 9 minutes in. They dont really like him and see him as a posh nerd. Will tries to arrange to meet the boys at the pub but they decline.

- Will's mum comes to collect him from school, all the boys notice and tell will how attractive she is but will is more embarrassed his mum has picked him up.

Jay is almost caught looking at porn so shouts at his mum not to come in his room but then quickly follows it up with asking for the money. Simon shouts at his mum when she tells him his hair has too much gel, he storms out and then comes back in to ask for the money. Will points out by voiceover that the word borrow means to spend and never give back - probably something done by a lot of teenagers watching the show.
- Will turns up at the pub at the same time as the boys and simon allows him to join them.
- The boys show up at a quiet pub with only a few locals. Jay offers to get the drinks in. The boys ask for a pint while will opts for a guiness. Jay's Id works as he pretends to be australian but is only able to buy a drink for himself. Will tries to buy the drinks, but also fails so tells the barman he has to allow them to buy cider with a meal so tries to order that from the carvery, but is also refused. - Carli texts simon asking where he is leading the boys to realise they are at the wrong pub.
- Simon is heckled by his new nickname of 'boner' when he arrives at the pub.
- Simon finds Carli and meets her boyfriend, Tom and lies telling them bith he is already drunk from the earlier pub. Carli and Tom leave together and Simon is left alone.
- Will tries to get served at the new pub but is again refused leading to an argument where will reveals all the students ages to be 16 and everyone is thrown out leading his peers to be furious with him.
- The lead school bully, Donavan, tells Will he is a dead man and will get revenge.
- Jay tells Will he doesnt want to be seen with him as he's an embarrassment and him and jay leave. Simon stays as he has offered to wait with him till his mum arrives. The 2 boys bond over Wills outburst and talk about Carli having a boyfriend.
This series uses the voiceover of main character Will to narrate the story and move it along. This is a good choice as will is the new character so we are brought into the series with him and therefore are discovering the school through his new eyes also. This makes us, the audience, feel close to will which is what u want for your main character.
The difference between this pilot and coupling as this focuses heavily on one character who he follow on his journey. It uses clips from other episodes in the future to give you an outline of whats to come without revealing to much and uses flashbacks at the end of the episode to summarise whats happened. Coupling focused on 2 stories and then brought them together while inbetweeners focuses soley on one story throughout the episode.
Hopefully i will find more useful points as i work through the series.

Major Project: Coupling episode 6 research
Locations: Patricks living room, bar sofas, bar table, Steve's bedroom.
Plotlines:
- Jane turns up at patricks house, he assumes for sex, although he tells the boys that he tried to get rid of her and she invited herself in.
- the boys also discuss films with lots of screen nudity and what female stars names they can think of that mean screen nudity.
- Jane goes to the house as she think patrick is lonely and wants to bond with him. She walks into a room and discovers it to be filled with tapes with girls names of them - his sex tapes.
- Jane asks patrick if he has room for one more tape. Steve is annoyed that he has a tape of susan.
- Jane is telling the same story to the girls. Susan is equally worried about the sex tapes. Sally is annoyed as she wanted to sleep with patrick and now thinks Jane is in her way. She brings up his size again as the reason she wants to sleep with him.
- Jane reveals she didnt sleep with patrick as he had another girl in his bedroom.
- Susan turns up at patricks flat and wants to know the tape is in safe hands. He says he has told steve and will tell her the same thing - that tape stays in that cupboard. She is thrilled until steve suddenly screams and emerges from the bedroom shouting 'she's never done that with me'. Letting susan know they are watching the tape. She walks into the room and sees that jeff is in their watching the tape. Susan asks how long they have been watching the tape and steve explains 5 minutes. Susan is furious because it isnt her on the tape. The boys havent been looking at her face. Susan is then annoyed that patrick has taped over her.
- Susan goes to put the tape back in the cupboard and finds sally hid in there. Sally also has thought that the tape is of susan.
- jane turns up to seduce patrick, mainly because of what the girls have told her about him.
- Susan is so upset with steve for even agreeing to watch it she dumps him. She also talks about how he nearly has proposed but he was more worried that she would say yes because he isnt ready to settle down.
- The boys discuss how steve has lost susan and he is devestated. Jeff asks how he is feeling and steve says 'flushed' linking back to the first episode once again.
- Steve is asleep in his own room, susan comes to see him and asks him to propose. She also tells him she may or may not say yes, just like how she may be naked under the coat. she removes her coat revealing she is naked. Steve says there is only one way he will know this isnt a dream just as he does jeff sits up next to him. Leaving the epiode on a cliff hanger as to what happens next.
That is the end of the 1st series. It ends on a sort of cliff hanger but nothing major like i have seen in other shows but we do not know if susan will say yes or if steve will ask her.
Overall the series is clearly heavily a comedy. It focuses heavily on a small amount of people and only introduces one or 2 other characters that only appear in the one episode. It focuses heavily on the relationship between 2 of its characters with the others providing b plot storylines aside from epsiode 5 which focuses on jeff who is primarily the light relief character. It is easy to see why this show was refered to as the british friends as it is quite simila although i find it a lot more sexual than friends. \
In terms of writing, it is clear the writer wanted to limit the amount of characters so that the first season doesnt bombard the audience with to many people to remember, it would take an audience a couple of episodes to get a feel for the characters and decide on their favourites so this seems like a good strategy. The locations are fairly repetitive throughout the series and this helps to establish structure for the audience and also is quite normal for people - most people have a favourite place they would meet with friends at - favourite bar, pub, coffee house or restraunt - so it is normal and helps the audience relate to the charcters.

Major Project: Coupling episode 5 research
Locations: Bar
Storylines:
- The boys are trying to guess an attractive girls name at the bar. Patrick finds out from reading the words on her phone when he passes her that it is a foreign language.
- The girl makes glances at jeff and the boys encourage him to talk to her.
- Jeff explains his concern that men always think about breasts and sometimes he worrys it will slip out when hes talking to a women and is too scared to talk to this girl.
- He finally gets the courage and says an awkward coming about noticing how she can read. However she doesnt speak any english. Her interpreter shows up and explains that she doesnt speak english which thrills jeff. He tries to arrange to meet her again but she is leaving the country so her interpretur says there isnt much point.
- the girls are now at the bar and looking at the woman and judging her. They say she is perfect until they notice she has the price tag stuck to her shoe. They notice that she has seen someone she likes and try and find out who it is and discuss the different guys in her eyeline and also notice jeff is stood there. Until they see she is loking at jeff.
- Susan sends him over and tells him not to worry talking to him because she wont understand him.
- An exchange plays out with the girl speaking israeli and the jeff speaking english. We then see the same conversation but with the girl speaking english and jeff speaking in another language. It is revealed she likes him and wanted to date him but she thought he liked alice. She then tells him to meet her outside in 5 minutes. if he wants to. She also arranges for him to meet alice tommorow as she thinks he has asked for a date with her. Due to jeff not understanding her he does not meet the girl.
- Also in this exchange jeff thinks the girls name is the israeli for breasts which also links with the name of the epsiode 'the girl with 2 breasts'. Howveer the girl mentions he shoudlnt talk about breasts around alice as she is sensitive about hers being small.
- Jeff waits for the girl he thinks he is meeting but notices the interpreter instead. he said he was expecting jadiaum, which of course meant breasts in english and so she punches him.
- It is revealed that jeff was also arrested at the airport for shouting the girls name(breasts) at the airport.
- Throughout the episode patrick tries to think of a title for a film about a girl who has brains in her boobs - a plot jeff came up with. At the end of the show patrick says he has the perfect title - the girl with 2 breasts. Steve says that is the stupidest title yet - ironic that it is the name of the episode.
This episode is one of the most unique as it is all set in the one location and also has the same scene run twice so we can see the different translations. This is a unique concept and a really different style for the show but still inkeeping with the theme, tone and pace of the other episodes. It is also the forst episode to only focus heavily on one character and focus more on an outside character than the other main cast.

Storylines and how they link:
- Steve rings Susan and is unable to speak to her as he panicks leading to an awkward 'pause'. This is discussed by the boys at a bar - juming between the moment of the pause and the boys dicussion. The boys compare the pause to patrick as he hasnt said anything and is sat at the table, awkward.

- Steve tried to recue the conversation by saying there is a fault on the line however susan hs heard steve breathing.
- Susan invites steve round for a date, she said she would cook. In a discussion with sally, sally worries that susan is giving off the impression that she will be having sex with steve 'that is what ill cook implies'. Susan disagrees but as they walk into the bar they over jeff ask steve if hes thought through his foreplay yet. As jeff continues to give advice susan stands behind him and ultimatly joins the discussion. Susan also clarifies with steve that cooking means just cooking. He understands. Here is the episode:
This episode helps to move forward the initial stories set in the pilot and also explain the future of the cast as they were not friends in the first episode but now they all meet together. There are also recurring locations such as the bar helping to establish some familarity with the program. There is also a clear A plot and a B plot in both these episodes so far. Plot A here goes along with the susan and steve story line. Plot b is about Sally and Patrick. Jane's gay boyfriend is a C plot. Jeff interlinks these storys. This research already is helping me to shape my planning for my scripts.
